What does my body temperature have to do with my Thyroid..?

Picture
Healthy energy levels depend on the thyroid gland, because it governs our metabolic rate and our core body temperature. Our metabolic rate is the rate at which we burn (and by burn I mean we literally produce heat) calories and turn it into energy.

Take the Thyroid Temperature Challenge

Thyroid Health

Healthy energy levels depend on the thyroid gland, because it governs our metabolic rate and our core body temperature. Our metabolic rate is the rate at which we burn calories and turn it into energy.
If our thyroid function is low, it slows down energy production and all metabolic processes.

Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is often overlooked or misdiagnosed and can be the underlying cause of these symptoms. Patients and their doctors often disregard these common signs of thyroid hormone deficiency, mistaking them for normal aging.

Although hypothyroidism occurs most often in women over the age of 40, its prevalence (which increases with age) is much higher than once thought. In fact, up to 10% of the general population may be affected by some degree of low thyroid function. An emerging and under-diagnosed condition is sub-clinical hypothyroidism.

Sub-clinical hypothyroid states may initially appear within normal lab test parameters, yet present with a clear picture of low thyroid function and are often associated with adrenal dysfunction.

If you have 5 or more of the following signs and symptoms, you may have low thyroid function:

Ø  Cold hands and or feet (General cold intolerance)
Ø  Weight gain
Ø  Fatigue and lethargy
Ø  Poor memory
Ø  Poor circulation
Ø  Puffy face hands and feet (fluid retention)
Ø  Dry skin and hair
Ø  Hair loss
Ø  Depression
Ø  Ringing in the ears
Ø  Thinning of the eyebrows
Ø  Hoarseness of the voice
Ø  Joint and muscle pain
Ø  Low body temperature
Ø  Menstrual disorders
Ø  Muscle weakness

Sometimes there are contributing factors such as mineral imbalance, adrenal and hormonal issues, so it’s important to uncover the underlying cause by having a thorough naturopathic consultation and testing where needed.

The good news is with the right naturopathic dietary and lifestyle advice and by correcting any underlying nutritional, adrenal and hormonal imbalances, your thyroid when healthy will help you feel more alive, have more energy and more passion for life.
